Course Name
Metallurgy of Steels - Basic

Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the participant will be able to: Get an insight about the structure of metals • Grasp the elementary theory of metals • Understand the fundamentals of annealing, solid solutions, precipitation hardening and diffusion • Understand the concept of binary phase diagrams, nucleation and growth, solidification and martensite reactions • Grasp the iron-carbon system • Understand the hardening of steel and other heat treatments • Understand the mechanical and chemical properties of steel, their evaluation and relevance • And gain information on typical international specifications and grades of steels

Description
The modern industry uses a variety of steels for these purposes, which include cryogenic steels to high-temperature steels. Corrosion resistance and weldability of these steels are of paramount importance from the application point. It is very important to understand the basic metallurgy of these iron-carbon and other complex alloy systems to understand and predict their physical, chemical and mechanical properties, so that one may be adequately equipped to select and to fabricate the most appropriate alloy grade for a particular engineering application

Course Outline
The structure of metals • The elementary theory of metals • Dislocations, slip, grain boundaries and vacancies • Annealing, solid solutions, precipitation hardening and diffusion • Binary phase diagrams, nucleation and growth, solidification and martensite reactions • The iron-carbon system • The hardening of steel and other heat treatments • Fracture and failure • Mechanical properties of steel, their evaluation and relevance • Chemical properties of steel, including corrosion resistance • Typical international specifications and grades of steels
