Basic Electrical Engineering

Objective:

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Build an understanding of importance of conservation of energy and performance assessment of electrical equipments and components
  • Understand electrical power system equipment and components
  • Learn specifications, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of electrical equipments as per standards and practices
  • Undertake testing of power, current, potential transformers and overhead transmission lines
  • Understand and maintain the protection systems
  • Learn power cable specifications, laying and testing
  • Know the substation grounding system and its testing methods
  • Build knowledge of diagnostic tests to assess condition of power system components.
Description:

This is an introductory course to understand the basic components of the electrical power system and their design, specifications, construction, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance. It is aimed at building the necessary practical knowledge of the participant to understand the testing methodology to maintain the uninterrupted power supply and also to know the methodology for testing of equipments for commissioning and in case of fault to ensure proper restoration of the system

Outline:
  • Introduction to electrical power systems including generation, transmission and distribution
  • Construction of transmission lines
  • Construction of EHV substations with different configurations
  • Electrical power components i.e. substation equipment
  • Isolators, Grounding Switches Instrument Transformers, Switchgears
  • Surge Arrestors and Protective Relays, Cables
  • Specifications, Maintenance of power transformer and testing as per international standards
  • Transformer testing at manufacturer and site including type and routine tests
  • Transformer fault finding and analysis of faults
  • Instrument transformers (CT, PT) principal of operation, rated current, burden, accuracy class, short time rating and testing as per IEC/BS/IEEE/equivalent standards
  • Switchgear (OCB, MOCB, SFC and VCB) testing, installation and commissioning, fault finding and analysis of faults
  • Electrical cables testing, installation and commissioning, fault finding and analysis of faults
  • Cable terminations and joints, fault locators
  • Diagnostic tests for equipments including Furan test, Residual Life Assessment (RLA) test, and thermography, tan delta tests
  • Substation grounding/Earthing – Earth mesh, grounding rods, measurements, maintenance and corrective actions
  • Disconnecting switches, its ratings and selection of voltage and insulation
  • Battery sets for protection and annunciation system, installation, testing and maintenance
  • DG sets for emergency power supply
  • Testing of surge arrestors as per IEC/BS/IEEE/equivalent standards
  • Electrical motors, sizing and selection and efficiency
  • Energy conservation and performance assessment of transformers, motors, capacitors and other relevant components.
